Vikram Doraiswami has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to China. Currently, he serves as the High Commissioner to the UK. This change, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, highlights his extensive diplomatic experience.
Doraiswami joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992 after a year in journalism. He earned a master’s degree in history from Delhi University and completed a Diploma in Chinese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
His career has taken him to various significant roles. He began as a Third Secretary in Hong Kong and later served in Beijing. He has held various positions in the Ministry of External Affairs, including Deputy Chief of Protocol and a stint as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. His work includes serving as India’s Political Counsellor at the UN and as Consul General in Johannesburg.
In academia, experts emphasize the importance of understanding the cultural and political context for effective diplomacy. In light of evolving global dynamics, Doraiswami’s ability to communicate in multiple languages, including Chinese and Korean, is particularly valuable.
Statistically, the relationship between India and China is critical. Recent data shows that around 33% of India’s trade is with China. This calls for strong diplomatic ties, which Doraiswami’s appointment seeks to enhance.
His varied experiences, from negotiating at the UN to his leadership in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific, position him well for the challenges ahead in China.
Doraiswami enjoys reading, fitness, and jazz music, showing a well-rounded personality outside of his diplomatic duties. His diverse interests reflect the global approach necessary in today’s interconnected world.
He is expected to take up his new role shortly, as both nations continue to navigate their complex relationship.
