JASPER, Ga. – A tragic shooting occurred at the Pickens County VA clinic earlier this week.
On Tuesday afternoon, around 1:30 PM, Lawrence Charles Michels, 51, walked into the clinic for a mental health consultation. During the visit, he shot Nicholas “Nic” Crews, a 34-year-old social worker. Crews was quickly taken to a trauma center but sadly passed away the next day.
Authorities reported that Michels had a handgun and exchanged gunfire with Jasper police officers and a bystander before he was shot and killed at the scene. Fortunately, no one else was hurt.
The investigation is still ongoing, focusing on what led to this shocking incident. Once completed, the findings will be sent to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further review.
Following the tragedy, VA Secretary Doug Collins expressed his condolences on X, stating, “Rest in peace to a dedicated colleague, Nicholas Crews, who died as a result of this week’s tragic shooting at the Pickens County VA Clinic in Jasper, GA.” He emphasized that the VA is providing support for Crews’ family, coworkers, and local veterans.
As part of the investigation, autopsies are scheduled for both Crews and Michels at the GBI Crime Lab. The clinic itself will remain closed for the remainder of the week, underscoring the serious impact this event has had on the community.
