COLUMBIA, S.C. — Prisma Health is teaming up with the University of South Carolina (USC) to run a new Brain Health Center. The center, located near Prisma Health’s Richland Hospital, aims to offer advanced treatments for various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
The grand opening included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting the center’s innovative features. Among them is the first 7-Tesla MRI scanner in South Carolina, which promises to enhance diagnostic capabilities for patients.
Dr. Tony Asher, president of the Prisma Health Neurosciences Institute, emphasized the importance of brain health in leading fulfilling lives. He expressed excitement about collaborating with USC to strengthen community health and provide better neurological care.
The Brain Health Center isn’t just about medical treatments. It will also introduce lifestyle programs focused on preventing cognitive diseases and offer support for families and caregivers. Importantly, USC students will have opportunities to engage in research and advanced training related to brain health.
According to a recent survey by the National Institute of Aging, nearly 50 million people worldwide are living with dementia, a number projected to double every 20 years. This partnership is particularly relevant as it addresses a growing public health issue, ensuring more South Carolinians have access to the care they need.
Sarah Kirby, USC’s associate vice president for clinical affairs, highlighted the collaborative effort to improve diagnostics and provide groundbreaking treatments. This partnership promises to not only help patients but also support families navigating these challenging conditions.
The Brain Health Center will be a key part of USC’s Brain Health Network, which aims to service underserved areas across South Carolina.
