He said, “If a $500,000 engineer only consumed about $5,000 in tokens, I would definitely be alarmed.” For Huang, it signals a lack of engagement with AI tools that can enhance productivity.

At a GPU Technology Conference, Huang noted that AI tokens might play a significant role in attracting new talent, stating, “Engineers will get a solid base salary, but I’ll also provide them tokens to significantly boost their productivity.”

Currently, companies are exploring ways to compete for talent by including AI resources as part of their compensation packages. Recent reports suggest that AI tokens could become a fourth component of employee pay, alongside salary, bonuses, and equity.

Experts like Tomasz Tunguz have commented on this trend, suggesting companies may start advertising job roles with token budgets alongside salaries. This shift reflects a changing landscape where candidates are curious about their access to AI resources.

In a recent conversation, OpenAI’s Sam Altman brought up the idea of “Universal Basic Compute.” He imagined a future where everyone has access to AI computational power to use as they wish, making it less about cash and more about productivity.
