For years, six chambers of commerce in Hampden County have joined forces to tackle an important issue: food insecurity.
This year, they are hosting the third annual Fill the Food Bank event on March 31. This fundraising and networking occasion supports the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. This nonprofit plays a crucial role, sourcing, storing, and distributing food to local pantries. In 2025 alone, these pantries helped over 122,000 people.
The impact of donations is significant. For every dollar given, the Food Bank can provide three meals. Jillian Morgan, the Food Bank’s director of development, shared that their efficiency comes from partnerships with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program, and local grocery stores.
The event not only raises money but also brings people together. Last year, around 150 attendees donated nearly 2,000 pounds of food. Each year has a unique theme for food contributions. The first year focused on rice and beans, last year it was peanut butter and jelly, and this time, the emphasis is on soup and pasta. The chambers coordinate with the Food Bank to determine what’s most urgently needed. Last year, they raised over $10,500 and collected significant food donations.
“Networking is key,” Morgan noted. This event is a chance to meet leaders from other chambers and explore collaborative opportunities. Attendees can enjoy a baked potato bar and enter raffles with prizes donated by chamber members, with all proceeds aiding the Food Bank.
Food insecurity is a growing concern. Szynal mentioned the rising cost of living is pushing more people to seek help, potentially surpassing the numbers from the pandemic. With federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program set for summer 2026, more individuals may rely on the Food Bank.
