The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced an exciting new project at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. This site, once focused on uranium enrichment, is now set to become a hub for technology and power generation.
The project will feature a massive 10-gigawatt data center, along with new power generation capabilities. A significant portion of this will come from natural gas, specifically 9.2 gigawatts. The aim is to support the increasing demand for artificial intelligence technologies, as highlighted by the push from tech leaders, including President Trump, for companies to develop their own power sources.
SoftBank Group and its affiliate, SB Energy, are key players in this initiative. Together with AEP Ohio, they’re investing $4.2 billion in updates to the power grid and new transmission lines, promising that these improvements won’t spike customer rates.
This partnership is part of the broader U.S.-Japan Strategic Trade and Investment Agreement, which includes $33.3 billion tied to natural gas projects. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized that this venture will also create thousands of jobs and contribute to advancements in fusion energy, quantum computing, and national security.
Interestingly, Ohio is currently home to about 200 data centers, ranking fifth in the nation. This includes major players like Google and Amazon Web Services. However, not everyone is happy about this growth. Recently, some Ohio residents filed a petition for a constitutional ban on large data centers, voicing concerns over environmental and societal impacts.
On the tech front, SoftBank is working with OpenAI and Oracle on a project called Stargate. This initiative aims to bolster U.S. data center capacity and could attract a staggering investment of up to $500 billion.
Construction on the Portsmouth project is set to kick off this year, with the goal of not just enhancing AI research but also feeding excess power back into the grid. This could help lower electricity costs for local residents.
