Nintendo is gearing up to release a new version of the Switch 2 in the EU. This update will allow users to easily swap out their own batteries. Currently, the Switch 2’s battery is glued in, making it tough to replace. But, starting in February 2027, EU regulations require devices to be more user-friendly in this respect.
The new console and Joy-Cons will both feature replaceable batteries. In Japan, the Switch 2’s specs will remain unchanged for now. Nintendo has not commented on the news yet.
If this Switch 2 revision is only available in the EU, it wouldn’t be the first time a company has done this. For example, FujiFilm’s Instax Mini Link 3 comes with a user-replaceable battery but is only available in Europe.
Interestingly, this shift toward replaceable batteries reflects a broader trend. Many phone manufacturers have started producing easier-to-repair devices, likely due to the rising awareness around right-to-repair legislation. With game consoles evolving to last nearly a decade, making them easier to maintain could greatly benefit gamers.
A recent survey by the Repair Association found that 80% of consumers support the right to repair. This push may be influencing companies like Nintendo to move in that direction. Many gamers hope that having the option to replace batteries will lead to fewer costly repairs and longer use of their favorite consoles.
