KINGSTON, Jamaica, Mar 20 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has teamed up with the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) to launch a new initiative focused on improving climate and ecosystem resilience in Jamaica.
UNDP Resident Representative, Dr. Kishan Khoday, and EFJ CEO, Mrs. Nicole Adamson, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening support for community organizations during the crucial recovery phase following Hurricane Melissa.
This partnership, which lasts for five years, intends to enhance funding opportunities for local civil society organizations (CSOs). It will focus on areas like ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and inclusive community development, contributing to Jamaica’s Vision 2030 goals.
The MoU is significant because it highlights the connection between environmental and social development, especially concerning children and youth. Khoday emphasized that innovation and collaboration are vital to building resilient communities as climate challenges grow. He noted that these local organizations play a crucial role in shaping Jamaica’s climate policies.
Over the past 30 years, the UNDP has supported community-based initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable finance solutions in line with Vision 2030. Adamson expressed that this partnership is a step forward, allowing both organizations to combine efforts in promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection.
This initiative comes during a time of heightened awareness about climate change. According to a recent survey by the Jamaican Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, over 70% of Jamaicans express concern about the impacts of climate change. As more people engage in environmental issues, partnerships like the one between UNDP and EFJ become even more crucial.
With support from the government and engagement from the community, there is optimism that these collaborative efforts will create meaningful change. Together, they aim to tackle pressing climate issues, ensuring a better environment for future generations.
