The University of Lynchburg equestrian team took part in the Tournament of Champions at the University of Findlay on Saturday, showcasing two teams: Team Black and Team Red. The competition was intense, but Team Red shined, finishing in second place with 32 points. Team Black also put forth a solid effort, ending in eleventh with 17 points.
Lynchburg riders showed their skills across different divisions. In the Open Flat category, Jessica McElhaney from Team Black and McKenzie Burch from Team Red both earned second-place finishes. The Intermediate division was especially impressive, with Ava Jackson of Team Red winning the Intermediate Fences event and Adam Matejko from Team Black taking first in Intermediate Flat A. Ava Hogan from Team Red added valuable points by finishing fifth in Intermediate Flat B.
The Limit classes also provided exciting results. Team Red’s Emily Futty secured first place in Limit Flat A, and Ashby Watts from Team Red came in sixth in Limit Fences. Ruby Suess from Team Black also contributed with a fifth-place result in Limit Flat B.
In the Novice category, Annabella Shores from Team Red claimed first in Novice B, while Sophia Schorr from Team Black placed sixth in Novice A. Introductory riders also made their mark, with Amaya Shuler from Team Black finishing fifth in Introductory A and Hallan from Team Red taking fourth in Introductory B.
Overall, Lynchburg riders consistently placed well across all divisions, helping Team Red secure a strong second-place finish. Team Black gained valuable experience racing against tough competition.
Looking ahead, the Hornets’ IHSA team is gearing up for the IHSA Zones on April 4 in Baltimore at Goucher College.
