Texas Longhorns Make a Statement in the NCAA Tournament
In a thrilling matchup, the Texas Longhorns stunned the Gonzaga Bulldogs with a 74-68 win, advancing to the Sweet 16. Coach Sean Miller isn’t buying the “Cinderella” label for his 11th-seeded team. He believes Texas deserves respect for its legacy and success in the SEC.
After their victory, Miller confidently stated, “We don’t want to be seen as underdogs.” This win marks Texas’s 11th NCAA tournament victory as a double-digit seed, the most among all programs since seeding began in 1979.
Miller is now 9-1 in the round of 32, the best record in this round since the NCAA expanded the tournament in 1975. His achievement surpasses legends like Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.
This year, Texas faced tough opponents in the SEC, beating teams like Alabama and Georgia. Miller credited this challenging schedule for preparing his team for the postseason. “The league itself prepares you for the postseason,” he said, noting that tough games throughout the season strengthened their resolve.
One standout player was guard Jordan Pope. After rolling his ankle late in the game, he still managed to step up, scoring 17 points overall. His clutch 3-pointer with just over two minutes left boosted Texas’s lead significantly.
Texas is now among just six teams to start in the First Four and reach the Sweet 16 since this format began in 2011. As they look ahead, Miller expressed hope to keep the momentum going.
The Longhorns’ journey is not just about survival but about proving their strength. With determination and teamwork, they aim to go even further in this year’s tournament.
