Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently emphasized the need for a structured approach to support innovation in India. At the Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit held at IIT Bombay, he called for creating an institutional framework that helps young innovators turn their ideas into market-ready products. Pradhan believes that this step is vital for advancing India’s research landscape.
He pointed out that while India excels in research output, with a significant number of publications and citations, the real challenge lies in transforming these findings into commercially viable products. According to Pradhan, addressing daily issues and anticipating future needs is essential for driving this change.
Pradhan also noted India’s progress in technology, citing a leap in its global innovation ranking from 81st in 2015 to 38th today. He urged a collaboration between academic institutions to dismantle the barriers that hinder effective research and product development.
Professor Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the gap between initial research and final product development, often referred to as the “valley of death.” He stressed that incubators play a crucial role in nurturing early-stage innovations and urged stronger partnerships among institutions to make a greater impact.
This pre-summit serves as a lead-up to the ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’ event scheduled in France this June. This international showcase aims to present India’s top deep-tech ventures to global investors, further enhancing India’s position in the innovation landscape.
