TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State softball team, now ranked No. 10, dominated the California Bears with a 9-1 victory on Sunday at JoAnne Graf Field. This win capped a successful three-game series sweep and improved their record to 28-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
The game began quietly, with neither team scoring in the first inning. However, Makenna Sturgis drew a walk in the second inning and was soon followed by Marin Heller, who hit her first career home run. This put Florida State up 2-0. Hayley Griggs added to the momentum by walking, and Isa Torres got a hit, setting up Jaysoni Beachum, who brought Griggs home with a single.
By the end of the second inning, Shelby McKenzie widened the lead to 4-0 before California managed to respond. The Bears scored their first run with a double that took a bad hop, but a clutch play by Makenna Reid prevented further damage.
In the bottom of the third, Kennedy Harp hit her 12th career triple. Sturgis brought her home, raising the score to 5-1. The Noles kept pushing, with McKenzie and Ashtyn Danley putting runners in scoring position for Harp again, who knocked in another run. Anna Hinde capped the scoring with a home run, making the score 9-1.
On the pitching side, Ashtyn Danley started strong, striking out four in 2.2 innings. Reid took over and secured the win, allowing just one hit over 1.1 innings. Bella Dimitrijevic closed the game with precision, striking out two.
This series was notable not just for the win but also for the overall performance of the players. Heller’s home run was significant as five true freshmen on the team have now hit homers this season. Beachum’s single extended her impressive streak of reaching base safely in the last 20 games. Meanwhile, McKenzie is on fire, accumulating an impressive 9-for-11 with four homers and 10 RBIs in her last four games.
As of now, Florida State has won 17 consecutive games and six in a row against California. They will return to the field on Tuesday to face North Florida at 6 p.m.
