It’s been over 15 years since Samsung introduced the S Pen with its Galaxy devices. This stylus has always used Electromagnetic Resonance (EMR) technology. Recently, there were rumors about Samsung possibly switching to a new stylus technology for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. However, it seems that this change may not happen.
A recent report from ETNews says Samsung tested a new stylus but decided against using it. EMR technology needs a special digitizer in the display. In contrast, AES technology doesn’t require a digitizer. It uses a stylus with a built-in battery that works with the touchscreen. While AES might seem appealing, it does make the stylus bulkier.
Interestingly, Samsung has reportedly developed a new type of stylus that merges the benefits of both EMR and AES. This new technology aims to eliminate the need for a battery or a digitizer. However, Samsung has postponed using this new tech, and the reasons for this delay are unclear.
One reason Samsung might eventually move away from EMR is the Qi2 wireless charging standard. This standard requires neodymium magnets in smartphones, which can interfere with the S Pen’s technology. As a result, Samsung may be waiting for its new stylus technology to mature before it launches in future Galaxy S Ultra devices.
In recent years, the stylus market has been evolving. According to IDC, the global market for digital styluses is expected to grow by 20% annually until 2025. Users are actively seeking styluses that enhance productivity, especially as remote work becomes more common. So, it’ll be interesting to see how Samsung adapts to these trends.
