LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. — Local leaders recently celebrated the completion of a significant project: the expansion of medical and mental health facilities at the county jail. This nearly $9 million project includes 60 new cells that can house 90 inmates, specifically designed to serve those with mental health needs.
Sheriff Ashley Paulk emphasized the importance of this expansion. He stated, “By creating a dedicated space for inmates with mental health needs, we can provide better care while enhancing safety for everyone involved.” This initiative not only aims to improve inmate care but also reflects a broader commitment to responsible corrections.
The funding for this project came from a mix of American Rescue Plan Act funds and local revenue sources. Commissioner Demarcus Marshall stressed the significance of investing in public safety, noting, “It’s crucial that we support community members facing mental health challenges.
