DULUTH, Minn. — The 3rd annual “Cheerio Challenge” kicked off this week in Duluth, and it’s more than just a quirky name. This food drive was inspired by billionaire Kathy Cargill’s comment about Mayor Roger Reinert back in 2021. She joked about him “peeing in his Cheerios” when asked about her property purchases on Park Point. The residents of Duluth turned that comment into a positive initiative to help those in need.
The challenge has a noble goal: collecting non-perishable food items for local nonprofits, including CHUM, the Damiano Center, the Duluth Union Gospel Mission, and the Salvation Army. Over the past two years, the Cheerio Challenge has made a significant impact, gathering more than 1,200 boxes of Cheerios and raising over $115,000 for these organizations.
April Ledoux, the Director of Distributive Services for CHUM, highlighted the ongoing need for food donations. “Cereal is important for everyone, young or old. We go through so many boxes at CHUM,” she noted. This sentiment is backed by recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which indicates that food insecurity continues to affect millions of Americans, making initiatives like the Cheerio Challenge critical.
Running until Saturday, the Cheerio Challenge allows you to drop off your donations at several locations, including Peace Church, Our Savior’s Church, and the Labor Temple in Duluth.
This community effort not only helps fill pantries but also brings people together, turning a humorous remark into a meaningful cause.
