ACWORTH, Ga. – The Elon women’s golf team is currently in ninth place at the Bentwater Collegiate, with a total score of 52-over par 628 (315-313) after two rounds at Bentwater Golf Club.
The team improved by two strokes in the second round. Senior Ashley Lafontaine led the way with a strong comeback, shooting a 4-over 76. She is now tied for 19th overall at 12-over par (80-76).
Elon’s performance showcased balanced scoring, with three players in the top 26. Kelly Zhao is also tied for 19th at 12-over (80-76), cutting four shots off her first round. Lilli Downer holds a tie for 26th at 13-over (75-82).
Lara Rieke improved her game as well, finishing tied for 36th at 15-over (80-79). Emma Hansen rounds out the team in 52nd at 18-over (80-82).
One interesting aspect of this tournament is how teams are adapting to challenges in women’s golf. According to a recent report from the National Golf Foundation, women’s participation in golf has grown by 32% since 2019. This trend reflects a broader cultural shift, as more young women are seeing golf as an empowering sport.
