Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney recently announced the signing of James Hagens to an AHL amateur tryout agreement. Sweeney expressed excitement about Hagens joining the Bruins, emphasizing that this move is key for the young player’s growth. The agreement allows Hagens to gain valuable experience with the Providence Bruins, keeping his development on track.
Hagens, just 19 years old, was drafted by the Bruins first overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 193 pounds, he has already made a name for himself. This past season at Boston College, Hagens topped the Hockey East scoring charts with 23 goals and 24 assists, totaling 47 points over 34 games. His knack for clutch performances was highlighted by leading the team in game-winning goals and achieving two hat tricks.
His impressive record earned him a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team after his sophomore year, where he tallied 37 points. In total, Hagens played 71 games at Boston College, racking up 34 goals and 50 assists.
Before college, Hagens thrived in the United States National Team Development Program, where he amassed 72 goals and 115 assists, ranking fifth in program history. His skill on the international stage is noteworthy too. Hagens has represented the U.S. in two IIHF World Junior Championships and two U-18 World Championships—winning gold in both events. Notably, he set a record for the U-18 tournament with 22 points, earning MVP honors in 2024.
