NASA’s recent examination of the Moon has uncovered a brand-new impact crater, estimated to be around 225 meters long. This crater is significant because such large impacts are rare, occurring roughly once every 139 years. The discovery comes as NASA moves forward with its Artemis 2 mission, aiming to return humans to the Moon.
The crater’s formation was revealed through routine images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. While the Moon, with its lack of atmosphere, sees many impacts, this particular crater stands out due to its size. The Moon’s surface has been shaped by billions of years of impacts, but this one is a big deal.
Experts predict that the impact which created this crater would have blasted rocks and dust wide and fast, creating potentially hazardous conditions over a large area. As planetary scientist Mark Robinson pointed out, the crater formed near a rocky highland and a flat area, influenced by ancient volcanic activity. The debris from the impact has spread for hundreds of meters.
Ahead of the Artemis 2 mission, concerns have arisen about the safety of future lunar structures. Crewed missions will need to be built tough to withstand high-speed debris, especially since particles can travel as fast as one kilometer per second.
The Artemis 2 mission aims to send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon, with the launch expected to happen after April 1, 2026. The mission has faced delays due to various technical issues, but excitement is building as scientists prepare for a human return to lunar exploration.
