Two Indian LPG carriers, Jag Vasant and Pine Gas, have crossed the crucial Strait of Hormuz, carrying an impressive load of 92,612.59 metric tonnes of LPG. This successful transit is a notable achievement in energy transportation.
With 33 and 27 Indian seafarers on board, the vessels navigate a region known for its geopolitical tensions. Their journey begins with a trip through the Persian Gulf, and they are expected to reach Indian ports between March 26 and 28, 2026. The Indian government recently highlighted this successful passage, reassuring the nation about energy security in light of the ongoing West Asia conflict.
Previously, two other Indian flagged vessels, MT Shivalik and MT Nanda Devi, safely delivered a similar quantity of LPG—enough to meet nearly a day’s cooking gas needs for the country. The government’s commitment to maritime security was emphasized by Special Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha, who assured that the safety of seafarers remains a top priority until all remaining ships stranded in the region are safely evacuated.
Historically, the Strait of Hormuz has always been a vital route for global trade, especially for oil and gas. Recent tensions in the region have raised concerns. For example, statements from Iran about restricting enemy vessels from passing through have only heightened the stakes. Despite these challenges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in India’s crude oil reserves, which have increased significantly over the past decade. He stated that strategic petroleum reserves will expand from 53 lakh to over 65 lakh metric tonnes.
