Ofcom, the UK’s broadcasting regulator, is taking a closer look at climate change denial on TV and radio for the first time since 2017. This is a big step for campaigners who argue that some channels have been spreading harmful misinformation without facing consequences.
Recent complaints about TalkTV and TalkRadio had previously been ignored, with Ofcom rejecting over 1,000 similar complaints since 2020. However, a letter from the Good Law Project (GLP) in January prompted Ofcom to reassess these complaints. They have now agreed to investigate further, citing concerns about fairness and accuracy in the broadcasts.
One notable complaint came after a guest on TalkTV claimed climate change was “a deliberate effort to create fake anxiety.” Another guest labeled the Labour government’s energy policies as “driven by pseudoscience.” Ofcom recognized that these comments raised significant issues under their broadcasting rules.
A GLP spokesperson expressed satisfaction that Ofcom is finally taking action, saying it’s important for the regulator to hold channels accountable. Ofcom has acknowledged that it needed to reevaluate its approach to fairness in these broadcasts.
Interestingly, Ofcom has received 1,221 climate-related complaints since 2020. However, only two breaches of the broadcasting code have been found in the last 20 years. In contrast, France’s broadcasting regulator, Arcom, has identified several breaches recently, even fining a channel for false claims about climate change.
Many believe that Ofcom’s slow response shows they’re not well-equipped to handle the growing problem of climate misinformation. A spokesperson for the Stop Funding Heat campaign noted that Parliament should step up and demand better oversight to ensure broadcasting standards are upheld.
