OpenAI recently announced the unexpected shutdown of its AI video generator, Sora. This decision comes just six months after the app’s launch, which allowed users to create and share hyper-realistic AI videos.

Sora was publicly launched in late 2024 and gained popularity fast, especially after introducing Sora 2 and a stand-alone app last September. It quickly soared to the top of the Apple App Store, with users making quirky videos like dogs driving cars and even Princess Diana doing parkour. However, it faced backlash for promoting violent, racist content and misusing copyrighted characters, deepfakes, and misinformation.
Interestingly, just three months prior to the shutdown, OpenAI and Disney had forged a partnership allowing users to create videos featuring over 200 Disney characters from franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. Disney commented on OpenAI’s decision, emphasizing respect for the rapidly changing AI landscape. “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams,” they stated, hinting at a commitment to responsibly engage with AI technologies in the future.
Despite recent efforts to make Sora safer for teenagers—including measures against harmful and inappropriate content—OpenAI provided no hint of this closure. A recent blog post discussed strategies to enhance user safety.
