The University of North Carolina has announced a change in leadership for its men’s basketball program. Hubert Davis, who has been the head coach for five seasons, will not return. This decision was made by athletics director Bubba Cunningham and executive associate athletic director Steve Newmark, and it was approved by Chancellor Lee H. Roberts.
Cunningham expressed gratitude for Davis’s contributions as a player, coach, and community leader, noting the special memories he helped create. He emphasized the need for the program to move forward in a way that allows the team to compete more consistently at a high level.

The search for Davis’s replacement is underway. Cunningham and Newmark are leading this effort with the help of the executive search firm Turnkey ZRG. They are also consulting an advisory group of former players, coaches, and supporters to guide their decision.
Davis has a rich history with the Tar Heels, having played from 1988 to 1992 and later enjoying a 12-year NBA career. He served as an assistant coach under Roy Williams for nine years before stepping up as head coach in April 2021.
In recent years, college basketball has seen high turnover among coaches, influenced by changing expectations and competitive environments. For instance, a 2022-2023 NCAA report revealed that nearly 30% of coaching positions in major conferences saw changes. This trend reflects the growing pressure on programs to achieve immediate success.
