Epic Games is making significant changes, laying off over 1,000 employees and cutting costs by $500 million. This move affects around 20% of its workforce, leaving just over 4,000 people at the company. CEO Tim Sweeney shared this tough decision in a memo, addressing the challenges the company is facing.
Sweeney noted that engagement with “Fortnite,” their flagship game, has declined since 2025. This dip means the company is spending more money than it earns, prompting the need for these layoffs. He explained that these cuts, combined with other cost-saving measures, are aimed at stabilizing the company’s finances.
The gaming industry is under strain, according to Sweeney. Many companies are seeing slow growth and reduced spending. Additionally, newer consoles aren’t selling as well as before, and games are competing with various other entertainment options for player attention.
In February 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion into Epic Games, acquiring a minority stake. This investment underscores the potential of Epic’s gaming ecosystem, especially with the popularity of “Fortnite.”
Interestingly, Epic Games isn’t alone in making tough decisions recently. Earlier, in September 2023, the company laid off about 830 workers, about 16% of its staff at that time. This pattern suggests that many companies in the tech industry are recalibrating to adapt to changing market conditions, a sentiment echoed by many analysts.
In a survey by the Entertainment Software Association, 70% of gamers reported feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of gaming options available. This reflects the industry’s challenge: standing out and maintaining engagement in a crowded market.
As the landscape shifts, it will be crucial for companies like Epic to innovate and connect with their audience. The combination of cost-cutting measures and strategic investments may help them navigate these choppy waters.
