Stay Calm, India: Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum Assure Fuel Supply—Stop Panic Buying!

State-owned oil companies in India have reassured the public that there is no fuel shortage in the country. They urged people not to panic buy or believe the rumors circulating on social media.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the largest oil company in India, confirmed that its outlets are fully stocked and operational. They stressed there is no need to worry about petrol or diesel availability. Similarly, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) declared reports of fuel shortages as “completely unfounded” and reassured that fuel supplies are stable nationwide.

The companies warned that misinformation can lead to unnecessary anxiety, impacting normal supply. They encouraged citizens to remain calm and rely on verified information instead of succumbing to panic.

India, a net exporter of petrol and diesel, maintains adequate stocks of crude oil, with supply chains operating smoothly. Even amid disruptions in global supply chains due to conflict in West Asia, India has diversified its sources, obtaining crude oil from West Africa, Latin America, and the US.

The war has affected liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, especially from Qatar. To prioritize domestic needs, the government has limited fuel supplies to industrial users like fertilizer plants. LPG is particularly impacted since India relies on imports for about 60% of its demand. Most of this comes from the Gulf countries, which are currently facing supply disruptions. Consequently, the government is focusing on domestic household needs, reducing LPG supplies to commercial users like hotels and restaurants by half.

In terms of public sentiment, social media trends show a mixture of concern and skepticism. Many users are sharing posts that either confirm or refute rumors, with hashtags like #FuelShortage trending in some regions. Experts suggest that providing clear and consistent information could help reduce panic.

Overall, the situation remains stable in terms of fuel availability, and staying informed is essential for everyone.
