NetEase Games has drawn from decades of comic book history to bring us Marvel Rivals, a game featuring 48 playable heroes. We talked to creative director Guangyun “GuangGuang” Chen and executive producer Danny Koo at GDC, where they shared their ongoing plans for this superhero shooter.
First, let’s clear up a question many fans have: Will we see original characters in Marvel Rivals? Koo says not anytime soon. “We have so many heroes already,” he explained. The studio does have the green light to create original characters in the future, but right now, their focus is on the existing roster.
One exciting upcoming event is the Path to Doomsday, a yearlong celebration that kicks off in April and ties in with the movie Avengers: Doomsday, set to release on December 18. Koo noted that the team plans content around a year in advance, ensuring updates align with the broader Marvel storyline. Although fans are eager for crossovers with other franchises, Koo emphasized that their priority remains on Marvel characters.
The Marvel universe has been evolving since 1939, with countless characters to choose from. Even though they plan to introduce two heroes every two months, Koo isn’t too worried about balancing the expanding roster. His primary concern is how to present these characters to players. He mentioned that other games with hundreds of characters face similar challenges, focusing on user interface (UI) optimization.
In exciting news for fans, the recent addition of characters like Deadpool and the Fantastic Four has varied gameplay. Koo mentioned that introducing unique mechanics is vital for new heroes. If a character is too similar to existing ones, it might lose some fun.
The latest hero added is White Fox, launched in Season 7, with Black Cat joining soon. Fans are buzzing about who will be the next two heroes, as Season 8 reveals approach.
Social media reactions have shown strong enthusiasm for Marvel Rivals. Players are eager to see characters like Bishop and Cyclops included in future updates.
As Marvel Rivals continues to grow, expect fresh challenges, new heroes, and combative strategies that keep gameplay exciting. The game’s connection to the larger Marvel narrative only adds to its allure for fans.
