Relay For Life at Florida State University (FSU) is stepping up in the fight against cancer with its annual fundraising event. Recently, the student organization raised over $34,000 in just one day for cancer research and patient support, working alongside the American Cancer Society (ACS). This impressive milestone was achieved during Giving Tuesday 2025.
“Relay For Life unites students for a cause greater than themselves, creating hope and support for those affected by cancer,” said Kelsey Strigler, the executive director of Relay For Life at FSU. She finds it inspiring to see the community rally together to raise funds and awareness.
The Giving Tuesday event included performances, pie-throwing contests, and a fundraising power hour. More than 35 student groups and 145 individuals took part, surpassing their initial goal of $20,000 by a fantastic $14,000—a 290% increase from the previous year.
“This is proof of the dedication and passion our student leaders have,” added Stormy McGivern, director of the FSU Office of Student Organizations and Involvement. “The funds raised directly support those in our community impacted by cancer.”
Relay For Life at FSU achieved national recognition this year, securing third place during Fall Fundraising Week and qualifying for the Fall Fumble, a bracket challenge for top fundraising universities. Winning this competitive event crowned them the “College Champion” by ACS, showcasing their hard work and commitment.
As part of the day’s activities, the organization hosted a dinner for cancer survivors, celebrating their journeys and resilience. This event culminated in a touching luminaria ceremony to honor those lost to cancer, featuring stories from survivors, including FSU softball coach Lonni Alameda. Melissa Schaldenbrand, senior development manager at ACS, noted the critical role of donations, highlighting services such as transport to treatment and lodging for patients at Hope Lodges while they undergo care.
This year’s big event will take place on April 11 at noon in the FSU Student Union Ballrooms, inviting community members to join in person and online.
Relay For Life aims to educate the campus about the American Cancer Society’s mission while fostering a supportive community among students—a crucial effort in the ongoing battle against cancer.
