Helena Regional Airport’s TSA workers have been serving passengers for six weeks straight during the government shutdown, and they’re doing it without pay. Community support is growing, showing that kindness can make a big difference.
Airport director Jeff Wadekamper highlighted the team spirit at Helena. “They’re part of our airport family,” he said. While other airports have struggled with long security lines and staff shortages, Helena’s 16 TSA employees have remained committed to their roles.
Wadekamper praised their positivity, saying, “You wouldn’t know there was a shutdown just by talking to them.” His sentiments are echoed by community members who are stepping up to help.
Helena resident Connor McSweeney shared his feelings: “It’s upsetting to think these workers clock in, but when they go home, they might struggle to put food on the table.” To help, he organized a “Meal Train” through Facebook, encouraging people to drop off food at the airport.
In partnership with Wadekamper, a food drop-off table has been set up right outside the TSA area. Community members, including those from Safeway and iFlyBigSky, have generously donated food and gift cards.
Safeway store director Eric Dowell remarked, “A lot of others walked off their jobs, but these workers are here, giving their best.” The store is even establishing its own drop-off location for donations.
So far, McSweeney reported that nearly a week’s worth of food for each TSA worker has been collected, with more coming in. He also reached out to local restaurants, many of which have shown eagerness to contribute meals.
“It’s heartwarming to see everyone step up,” McSweeney exclaimed. This community effort demonstrates a strong sense of solidarity during tough times.
According to a recent survey, community support initiatives like this are gaining traction nationwide, with a significant number of people willing to help those affected by government shutdowns. Reports suggest that kindness in small towns can make a huge impact on workers in distress.
