Meta is making some big changes. According to a leaked memo, they are renaming employees as “AI builders” and forming small teams called AI-native “pods.” This shift is part of Meta’s plan to boost productivity using artificial intelligence.

The update impacts about 1,000 workers in Reality Labs, the division that creates developer tools. Now, employees can hold one of three titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead. This new structure aims to create a flatter organization, which is something CEO Mark Zuckerberg supports.

The memo emphasizes a desire to enhance engineering productivity and product quality. It states, “Our ultimate goal is to drive a step change in engineering productivity and product quality.” Zuckerberg has previously mentioned that 2026 will be a pivotal year for AI, suggesting that AI could soon take on tasks that previously required large teams. Instead, one skilled person might handle those jobs.

Each pod will be made up of a small group of AI builders focused on specific projects. They might even collaborate across different roles, allowing engineers to take on design tasks, depending on what’s needed. Some Meta employees have already started calling themselves AI builders on LinkedIn.

The structure includes Pod Leads, who manage daily operations, and Org Leads, who handle performance reviews and promotions. These processes will be assisted by “AI systems,” though details are scarce.

Interestingly, this reorganization comes after Meta’s recent layoffs affecting some Reality Labs staff. However, a spokesperson clarified that this restructuring isn’t directly linked to the job cuts.

In broader trends, the adoption of AI in the workplace has been accelerating.
