Tufts University’s baseball team recently had a fantastic day, sweeping Suffolk University in a doubleheader. They won the first game 5-3 and cruised to a 10-0 victory in the second. This performance follows a successful 10-2 record, highlighting their strong start to the season.
The weather was chilly but sunny at Sol Gittleman Park. The Jumbos showed confidence at the plate and on the bases, giving their pitchers, Emmet Christian and Cole Donato, plenty of run support.
Malcolm Whitfield shone brightly in the first game. He scored three hits, knocked in four runs, and received two walks.
Christian kicked off the game strong with a quick first inning, striking out two batters. Whitfield quickly got into the action, reaching second base on a throwing error after his hit. The Jumbos built momentum in the second inning. Max Pavlik led off with a single, and with the help of a few walks, they managed to drive in three runs, leaving the score at 4-0.
Despite a couple of walks in the third, Christian managed to maintain his composure and keep Suffolk at bay. A two-run homer by Suffolk’s Sam Arbuster finally put them on the board in the fourth, but Tufts quickly responded. Christian added more runs thanks to Whitfield’s triple and Kamin’s double, keeping the Jumbos ahead at 5-2.
The game remained competitive but ultimately, Suffolk could not catch up. The final score was 5-3, with Christian finishing his day with two earned runs and seven strikeouts over six innings.
“We’ve been really aggressive on the bases, and that’s something we’ve been working on a lot,” said junior AJ Lysko. He praised the pitchers for their control at the mound, which allowed the Jumbos to hold their lead.
In the second game, Donato stepped onto the mound and continued the team’s strong performance. Early in the game, Suffolk’s pitching woes allowed the Jumbos to score. They piled on four runs in the second inning, aided by errors and walks.
Donato was sturdy on the mound, allowing no earned runs and striking out seven batters over six innings. Tufts controlled the game, scoring another five runs and finishing strong at 10-0. “The guys are doing good jobs taking chances, getting good jumps, and putting pressure on the defense,” Lysko added.
As Tufts celebrates this excellent day on the field, they will look to build on this momentum when they face the Bowdoin Polar Bears next weekend. Their aggressive style of play and strong pitching could be key to another successful outing.
