The European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have unveiled stunning new images of Saturn. These images, captured by the James Webb and Hubble space telescopes, provide us with an incredible glimpse into the atmosphere of this giant planet.
The Hubble telescope took its photos as part of the Outer Planet Atmosphere Legacy program in August 2024. The Webb telescope followed up with its own shots a few months later. NASA explains that both telescopes capture sunlight reflected from Saturn’s distinctive clouds and hazes. Hubble focuses on the planet’s color variations, while Webb’s infrared view helps us see deeper into the atmosphere, revealing details about clouds and chemicals at various levels.

Webb’s infrared technology highlights even more features, like the bright icy rings around Saturn. These rings look nearly white, while the planet’s poles show grey-green shading. This color variation may be due to high-altitude aerosols interacting with light or charged particles creating auroras.
Both telescopes provide valuable data for scientists. These observations highlight how Saturn is transitioning from northern summer towards equinox in 2025. As Saturn moves into southern spring and summer in the 2030s, Hubble and Webb will continue to offer us more detailed looks at its atmosphere.
