After North Carolina’s abrupt exit from the 2026 NCAA Tournament, questions arose about Hubert Davis’ future as head coach. On Tuesday, the Tar Heels announced that Davis would be stepping down, a decision that shocked few, including UNC legend Joel Berry.
North Carolina lost to VCU, letting a 19-point lead slip away. This unexpected end to their season follows a string of disappointing performances that have left the program at a crossroads.
Berry expressed his thoughts on the situation, wondering if the university would show understanding given Caleb Wilson’s season-ending injury. However, he emphasized the need for consistent results, especially in today’s world of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. He believes that this financial landscape played a significant role in the decision to move on from Davis.
“I wasn’t surprised at all,” Berry shared in an interview with SiriusXM College Sports Radio. “We’ve seen this happen before. They had a great regular season, going 24-7 and 18-0 at home, but losing your best player is hard. I thought they might take a moment to outline a future plan after that collapse. However, patience seems to be lacking these days.”
In the current NIL climate, player salaries have surged. According to a report from Opendorse, the Tar Heels’ roster payroll hit roughly $14 million this year, significantly higher than the average of $7 million to $10 million for teams in Power Five conferences.
Berry highlighted another critical point: donor support. He noted that if financial backing from boosters wanes, it becomes increasingly tough for a program to secure top talent. This could have influenced the decision to part ways with Davis.
“A coach can’t succeed without financial support. If donors restrict funding, it severely hinders progress,” Berry reflected. “The moment you hear that from boosters, it’s clear the program is in trouble. If the money isn’t there, winning becomes nearly impossible.”
This situation underscores a larger trend in college athletics: financial backing is becoming a make-or-break factor for success. In today’s competitive landscape, schools with strong donor networks are often better positioned to attract and retain talent, impacting coaching decisions and overall program health.
