GREENSBORO — The North Carolina A&T bowling team is gearing up for a big challenge. For the sixth consecutive season, they secured a spot in the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship, showcasing their skill and determination.
Next week, they’ll compete in the regional tournament in Lansing, Michigan. The Aggies are set to face the defending champions, Youngstown State Penguins, in their opening match on April 3 at 9 a.m. They come into this tournament with a strong record of 73 wins and 35 losses, backed by titles from the MEAC in five of the last six years.
Winning the MEAC granted them an automatic invitation to the tournament. They’ll be competing against top teams like Alabama A&M from the SWAC and others from various conferences. But the Aggies are not deterred. “We’ll need to be at our best,” says head coach Kim Terrell-Kearney, a seasoned leader with seven MEAC Coach of the Year awards. But she believes in her team’s growth week by week.
Currently, the Aggies are ranked 12th in the nation. They’ve faced Youngstown State four times this season without a win but are eager for a fresh start. They will also be competing against Jacksonville State, the number one seed, who will meet the winner of the Dominican vs. Alabama A&M match.
The format of the tournament includes double-elimination matches, except for the opening round. Teams will vie in best-of-three matches that include traditional team play and Baker format, which requires each player to bowl a series of frames.
Fans can look forward to championship matches set for April 10-11 in Parma Heights, Ohio, with the final airing on ESPNU.
Senior bowler Juliana Sams expressed her optimism: “After our recent win, I believe we’ve shown how much we’ve grown. We’re ready to showcase our skills.”
