Experience the Excitement: Minnesota Welcomes Michigan and Michigan State for the First-Ever ITA College Tennis Weekend!

MINNEAPOLIS – This weekend, the University of Minnesota tennis team is gearing up to host Michigan and Michigan State. This event marks the first-ever Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) College Tennis Weekend.

On Friday at 4 p.m. CT, the Golden Gophers will take on No. 18 Michigan, currently at 8-5. Then, they’ll face No. 74 Michigan State (8-8) on Sunday at noon CT.

### Gophers’ Season Overview

The Gophers started strong with six wins, including an impressive victory over Iowa State. However, they faced losses against Alabama and Colorado. They bounced back with a win over Drake, moving them to No. 53 in the rankings. Unfortunately, they’ve struggled recently, losing six straight Big Ten matches after a 7-0 win over South Dakota on March 18.

### What’s Happening with Michigan

Over the years, Minnesota and Michigan have met 52 times, with Michigan leading the series 37-15. The last match ended with a 6-1 win for Michigan on April 14, 2024. Despite a rocky start this season, Michigan is currently on a five-match winning streak, highlighted by two thrilling 4-3 wins over top-ranked opponents. The Wolverines feature strong players, including No. 20 Piper Charney and No. 21 Lily Jones.

### Michigan State’s Journey

Minnesota has a favorable history against Michigan State, leading the series 31-17 with a recent win of 4-2 on April 12, 2024. However, the Spartans have struggled lately, winning just three out of their last eleven matches. Their star player, Ellie Blackford, is active in both singles and doubles, boasting a strong record this season. The dynamic duo of Matilde Morris and Ellie Blackford ranks No. 37 in ITA doubles.

### Spotlight on Mia Liepert

One of Minnesota’s standout players is Mia Liepert, who has a strong singles record of 11-3 this spring. Her victory against No. 54 Mayu Crossley showed her potential. She recently achieved 50 career wins, marking a significant milestone in her college career.

### Celebrating College Tennis

The inaugural ITA College Tennis Weekend aims to bring the tennis community together. The Gophers will host special events, including Wimbledon Night on March 27 and Cancer Awareness Day on March 29.

### Keeping Up with the Gophers

Fans can stay updated on Gopher matches through their social media channels, and matches will be livestreamed for fans who can’t attend in person. Live scoring will also be available during the matches.

### Looking Ahead

Following this weekend, the Gophers will travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to face the Wisconsin Badgers on April 4.

In conclusion, this weekend promises exciting matches as Minnesota competes against formidable opponents while promoting community engagement through college tennis.
