LSU Welcomes Back Will Wade as Head Basketball Coach
LSU has announced that Will Wade is returning to lead its men’s basketball team. This marks his second term at LSU, having previously coached from 2017 to 2022.
During his initial tenure, Wade helped the Tigers win a Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship and made significant strides in rebuilding the program’s image. He was instrumental in revitalizing interest in LSU basketball, leading the team to four postseason tournaments in five years. Under his guidance, LSU won 48 SEC regular-season games, tying for the second most in the league during that period.
Wade is the first LSU coach to return to the head coach role since Harry Rabenhorst, highlighting the rarity of this decision. He steps in for Matt McMahon, who has coached for the last four years.
Athletic Director Verge Ausberry expressed excitement about Wade’s return, praising his ability to connect with players and fans. Wade himself shared that coming back to LSU is deeply personal for him. He sees this as an opportunity to build a strong program in a passionate basketball community.
In his first round at LSU, Wade achieved a record of 105 wins to 51 losses, with 55 of those victories coming in the SEC. Notable players during his first stint include Tremont Waters and Skylar Mays, who made significant contributions both on and off the court. Wade emphasized the importance of competing at a high level and fostering player development.
Historically, LSU basketball has seen peaks and valleys, but Wade aims to establish consistent excellence. According to a recent poll by ESPN, LSU fans ranked their basketball program in the top 15 nationwide, showcasing the community’s passion.
Before his return to LSU, Wade turned around the McNeese State program, leading them to two consecutive Southland Conference championships and earning back-to-back Coach of the Year awards. His coaching experience spans over 12 seasons, with a record of 266 wins and 119 losses, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
As for the future, Wade is energized by the challenge ahead. With a commitment to excellence and a focus on player development, LSU fans are eager to see how he will shape the next chapter for the Tigers.
