After a temporary closure due to flooding from a Kona low storm, the Target store in Kahului, Maui, is set to reopen on Sunday, March 30. This weather event brought heavy rain that overwhelmed the island’s drainage systems, leading to significant flooding across Maui. Many roads were affected, and various businesses faced closures as mud and debris made conditions unsafe.
Target had to close its Kahului location to clean up and ensure safety standards were met. While the store was closed, the team focused on supporting the local community, particularly the Maui Food Bank. They made significant contributions, including:
- More than 55 pallets of food donated from March 19 to 23.
- A $25,000 emergency grant to help the Food Bank increase its operations during this challenging time.
- Direct assistance in loading donations for transport.
Since opening in 2015, Target has partnered with the Maui Food Bank, which serves around 40,000 people each month in Maui County, including Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.
Manu Lopes, a Human Resource Business Partner, expressed pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “I’ve seen our crew work tirelessly to clean up and rebuild. They truly care for each other and the community.”
As the store prepares to reopen, it will resume regular hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and staff are working hard to restock shelves.
