Former Sabeto district representative Ilisoni Galala recently suggested creating a national rehabilitation committee to help those affected by climate change and natural disasters. He made his remarks during a public meeting about updating the Mining Act 1965 in Sabeto, Nadi.
Galala expressed sympathy for people living in vulnerable areas, particularly along coasts and on hilly terrain, who face issues like soil erosion and even have seen their villages washed away. He pointed out that without organized government efforts to support displaced individuals, their struggle for survival becomes increasingly challenging.
“I’ve proposed this idea and aim to ensure that the government considers it,” he mentioned. He intends to bring it up in future budget discussions.
In his view, the well-being of Fijians should take priority over other national interests. “People are our greatest asset, whether from Sabeto or elsewhere. We should all have a good quality of life,” he emphasized.
Experts in disaster management echo Galala’s concerns. According to a 2022 report by the United Nations, climate-related disasters have increased by 800% over the last 50 years. This trend highlights the urgent need for effective support systems for affected communities.
Galala has also reached out to various ministries to discuss his proposal further, hoping to drive positive change for those in need.
This initiative aligns with broader discussions on climate resilience, signaling a growing recognition of the importance of protecting communities grappling with environmental challenges.
