However, Kmart is making a change. Cathy Dai-Kamvissis, the apparel technical design manager, recently shared that their new autumn/winter collection will include more natural materials like cotton and wool. “Using natural fibers helps reduce odors and improves durability,” she explained. This shift is part of Kmart’s effort to enhance the quality of their clothing.
One shopper, Berra Er, took to TikTok to express her surprise at finding mostly synthetic materials in Kmart’s clothing. “It feels like there’s nothing made from cotton,” she said, highlighting a frustration many feel when shopping for comfortable fabrics.
Brisbane stylist Sarah Strozkiy emphasized the benefits of choosing natural fibers over synthetics. “Merino wool is the gold standard for lasting quality,” she said. Good garment care is essential; for instance, cold washing and air drying can extend the life of natural fabrics significantly more than cheaper acrylic options.
Strozkiy actively advises avoiding acrylic and 100% polyester. These materials can trap heat and odors and wear out quickly, leading to disappointment after only a few wears. The University of Alberta has found that polyester can retain sweat odor, making it less appealing for everyday wear.
Kmart’s recent collection reflects a commitment to quality. For instance, they’re introducing items like a cotton oversized t-shirt for $15 and a wool cardigan for $29. Yet, many new offerings still combine natural and synthetic fibers. Dai-Kamvissis mentioned Kmart’s investment in improving their fabric selection, involving better technology for quicker and more efficient production.
Recent trends indicate shoppers are becoming more discerning, with many checking labels for fabric content before making a purchase. This awareness could shape the future of retail clothing, prompting more retailers to offer higher-quality, natural options.
