It can be tough to sift through all the mixed messages about alcohol and health. Some say a nightly whiskey keeps you healthy; others claim a glass of wine can be good for the heart. Yet, we also hear that any alcohol is bad for you. So, what’s the truth?

A recent study presented at the American College of Cardiology suggests it’s more complex than just “drink or don’t drink.” Researchers analyzed data from nearly 341,000 adults in the UK Biobank. They found that heavy drinking is linked to worse health outcomes overall.

People who drank heavily had a 24% higher risk of dying from any cause, a 36% higher chance of cancer death, and a 14% greater risk of dying from heart disease compared to those who never or rarely drank.

But what about moderate drinking? This is where things get more intricate. Types of beverages play a role. Moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of dying from heart issues than those who never drank. In contrast, drinking spirits or beer even in smaller amounts was associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.

Zhangling Chen, who led the study, mentioned that health risks hinge not only on how much we drink but also on what we drink.

However, it’s essential to exercise caution. This study is observational, meaning it shows relationships but doesn’t prove direct cause and effect. Plus, wine drinkers may generally have healthier lifestyles, which could influence outcomes. Their alcohol intake was reported by themselves and might not reflect their actual consumption accurately.

There’s also a broader health concern worth noting. The CDC states that all types of alcoholic drinks are linked to cancer. The National Cancer Institute notes that even light drinking can increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer. So, while this new study provides more detail, it doesn’t clear wine from health risks.

The take-home message is clear: heavy drinking poses substantial risks, regardless of what’s in your glass. While the type of alcohol might matter, it doesn’t negate the fact that drinking always involves trade-offs. It’s crucial to consider all of these factors if you choose to drink.
