Bluesky is shaking things up with a new app called Attie. Unlike their social network, this is a clever AI assistant. Attie helps you create custom feeds and might even let you build your own apps down the line.
At a recent conference, Bluesky’s former CEO, Jay Graber, who is now the chief innovation officer, and CTO Paul Frazee introduced Attie. Attendees became the first beta testers of this innovative tool, which uses Anthropic’s Claude AI to create a user-friendly experience on Bluesky’s AT Protocol.
“This isn’t just another feature of the Bluesky app,” explains interim CEO Toni Schneider. “This is a standalone product developed by Jay’s new team. We want to allow a broader audience to build on the Atmosphere.”
With Attie, all you need to do is type your requests in natural language, making it feel like you’re chatting with a friend. You log in with your Atmosphere account, so Attie quickly learns about your interests and preferences based on your activity within the Bluesky ecosystem.
You might wonder what kind of questions you can ask. Simple ones like, “What posts should I see today?” or “Can you suggest something to share?” The beauty is in how easy it is to shape your own online experience without any coding skills.
Schneider emphasizes, “You control it. It’s built for people, focusing on how technology can enhance our social interactions.”
Interestingly, Graber points out that many major platforms often use AI to benefit themselves rather than the users. “We believe AI should serve individuals, enabling them to curate their own experiences,” she states.
The vision behind Attie is clear: to empower users. With new funding of $100 million secured last year, Bluesky aims to stabilize and enhance its platform over the next three years. This also gives them the bandwidth to tackle significant issues like privacy and monetization.
Bluesky isn’t looking to integrate cryptocurrencies, despite having investors from that space. Schneider says that their backers are interested in a decentralized social experience instead. They plan to explore various monetization strategies, such as subscriptions or hosting services, but specifics about Attie’s pricing are yet to be decided.
Schneider draws parallels between the Atmosphere and WordPress, hoping to cultivate a vibrant ecosystem where various apps can thrive together. “WordPress became a huge success, generating over $10 billion annually. We aspire to create something similar with the Atmosphere,” he notes.
With Attie, Bluesky is laying the groundwork for a new wave of social media that puts the power back into the users’ hands. The future looks bright as they continue on this innovative path.
