Residents in parts of Derbyshire are gearing up for a new food waste collection service that starts on Monday. Erewash Borough Council has already provided many homes with a small kitchen bin, compostable liners, and a lockable green bin for outside. More bins are on the way.
Separating food waste is important. It helps keep valuable resources from ending up in landfills, where they can’t be used. Instead, food waste can be turned into useful fertilizer.
However, it’s crucial to follow the rules about what to put in these bins. Items like garden waste, plastic, packaging, or liquids shouldn’t be included.
Food waste will be picked up weekly, on the same day as regular trash and recycling. A separate vehicle will handle the food waste, making the process efficient.
Mark Alfrey, a council member, emphasizes the benefits: “Wasting food means wasting money and all the resources that went into making it.” He encourages everyone in the borough, which has over 53,000 homes, to try out the new service. He added that flats will also receive bins later this year.
The call for better food waste management comes amid challenges faced by many councils. Earlier this year, it was reported that numerous councils struggled to meet government deadlines for introducing such services. Some cited issues with funding and a lack of special vehicles.
In fact, the UK produces a staggering 9.5 million tons of food waste each year, according to recent data from Wrap, a national charity dedicated to reducing waste. This waste could have provided enough meals for about 15 million people. Recycling food waste helps not just in waste reduction but can also help combat greenhouse gas emissions.
