Revitalizing History: Chandannagar’s 173-Year-Old Station in West Bengal Transformed Under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

The Ministry of Railways is on a mission to transform Chandannagar railway station in West Bengal into a modern hub. This upgrade is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a budget of ₹9.48 crore aimed at creating a world-class facility.

Chandannagar station is located about 33 km from Howrah, along the Bandel-Howrah railway line. It’s a vital stop for locals, offering essential services like ticket counters, waiting rooms, food stalls, and restrooms.

Historically, Chandannagar dates back to 1854, reflecting its rich past as a French colony established in 1673. It became part of India in 1951 after the Treaty of Secession. Remnants of its colonial history still show in its architecture.

The upgrade aims to blend French aesthetics with Indian engineering, according to Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway. “It will become more than just a station; it will stand as a symbol of modern India that respects its history,” he shared.

Once the work is completed, Chandannagar station will feature:

  • Spacious Waiting Halls: A 140 sqm lounge and dedicated restroom facilities.
  • Modern Tech: Automated Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), high-speed charging stations, and EV charging points.
  • Cultural Touch: The walls will showcase local art, celebrating the town’s heritage.
  • Accessibility: Features for differently-abled travelers, including ramps and tactile pathways.
  • Safety Measures: Enhanced security with CCTV and clear emergency exits.
  • Sustainable Practices: Incorporation of rainwater harvesting and solar energy to minimize the carbon footprint.
  • Digital Enhancements: A massive video wall and multiple train display boards for real-time updates.

According to a recent survey by the Indian Railways, modernized stations tend to see a 20% increase in passenger satisfaction. As travel becomes more technology-driven, such upgrades are crucial for accommodating both local and long-distance travelers.

Chandannagar’s efforts are part of a larger trend in India, where railway modernization is becoming a key focus. With the introduction of services like high-speed trains and digital ticketing, passengers are experiencing a significant upgrade in travel comfort.

In summary, the redevelopment of Chandannagar railway station is more than a construction project; it embodies a blend of history and modernity. As the station gets ready for its upgrade, it promises to deliver a more efficient, secure, and enjoyable travel experience for all.
