Billings School District 2 is making a significant move. They plan to buy an old downtown bank building for $4.5 million. This purchase aims to relocate administrative offices and expand classroom space for a highly sought-after health sciences program.
Currently, this program has around 500 students, and there’s a waiting list of about 100. “I want to become a CNA,” said Katherine Gause, a senior. She values the hands-on training she receives, which helps her prepare for college and further nursing qualifications.
The district believes that the new building will create more opportunities for students. “By being downtown, we can strengthen ties with the local medical community,” said Christine Simonsen, the director of health sciences. The objective is to offer quality education and keep students in the community for their careers in healthcare.
The administration will shift to the old Rocky Mountain Bank building across the street from Lincoln Center, freeing up space in the existing facility for additional classes. Superintendent Dr. Erwin Garcia pointed out a concerning trend—students dropping out due to a lack of clear career pathways. Expanding the health sciences program can provide those pathways and prepare students for jobs in this growing field.
Recent statistics underscore the demand for healthcare professionals. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in healthcare are expected to grow by 16% from 2020 to 2030. This trend supports the district’s focus on health sciences, ensuring local students are ready for these opportunities.
The new charter school is expected to welcome students by the 2027-2028 school year. “We’re excited about the potential,” Simonsen added. The aim is clear: equip students with the skills they need to thrive in today’s job market.
