Rep. Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democratic candidate for California governor, has accused former President Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel of meddling in the election. This comes after reports that Patel might release decade-old investigation documents related to Swalwell’s ties to a suspected Chinese spy.
According to a report from the Washington Post, Patel directed the FBI’s San Francisco office to prepare these files for public release. This is unusual, especially since the investigation did not lead to any criminal charges. The case involved Christine Fang, a suspected intelligence operative who helped Swalwell with fundraising in his early congressional campaigns. Swalwell cut ties with Fang in 2015 after being briefed by intelligence officials about foreign influence in Congress.
Despite these allegations, Swalwell has never been accused of wrongdoing. However, he expressed distrust toward the motives behind the document release. “I don’t trust them one bit,” he said, referring to the FBI’s recent decisions.
Swalwell believes Trump aims to undermine his campaign as he emerges as a leading candidate. A recent poll from UC Berkeley indicates Swalwell and former Rep. Katie Porter are the top Democrats in the governor race. Swalwell claims that Trump wants an ally in California to further his agenda: “A lot of people have bent the knee to this administration. But I will not.”
This isn’t the first time Swalwell has accused the administration of targeting its opponents. Last year, he sued a housing agency director for allegedly misusing government data against him, though he later dropped the case.
Earlier this week, Swalwell received an endorsement from the California Teachers Association, a significant player in state politics. Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff criticized the FBI’s actions, calling them an abuse of power that threatens democracy. Schiff, who has worked closely with Swalwell on investigations into Trump, stated that this behavior is a tactic to control California’s political landscape.
The release of the investigation details has sparked backlash among California politicians. Rep. Jimmy Gomez described the move as a waste of resources targeting a closed case where Swalwell was found innocent. He sees it as evidence of political maneuvering aimed at discrediting Swalwell just as he leads in polls.
Historical context reveals that cases of political interference aren’t new. For decades, politicians have accused rival parties of using institutions like the FBI for political gain. This ongoing battle illustrates how complicated and entwined politics and national security can be.
In 2023, Swalwell was blocked by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from serving on the House Intelligence Committee due to his past links with Fang. However, an investigation into his conduct concluded without finding any fault on his part.
Swalwell has emphasized that the FBI has previously cleared him and he cooperated fully during investigations. “It’s time to move on,” he stated, noting that attempts to silence him will not succeed.
