The University of Nebraska is making a bold move into western Nebraska by setting up shop in a well-known building. Recently, Sen. Paul Strommen and local officials revealed that the university will lease space in the old Cabela’s corporate headquarters in Sidney.
Strommen described this announcement as “big news for western Nebraska,” and it’s clear that the area is looking forward to this new chapter. Cara Pesek, a spokesperson for the university, expressed excitement about partnering with the community. The aim is to breathe new life into the former Cabela’s site, which has been mostly empty since Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela’s in 2017.
The university plans to utilize the space for various initiatives, such as academic programs, community engagement, and support for local entrepreneurs. While many details are still being ironed out—like the size of the space, start dates for programs, and overall costs—both Pesek and Strommen mentioned that donations would help cover initial expenses.
The Cabela’s campus spans over 450,000 square feet across two buildings and sits on 34 acres. This site hasn’t been home to many activities since Bass Pro Shops took over and laid off a significant portion of Cabela’s workforce. In May last year, a local firm, 59 Properties, purchased the campus for $1.5 million. They have already successfully redeveloped other former Cabela’s locations, indicating a positive trend for revitalizing the area.
This move comes at a time when many communities are looking to repurpose underutilized spaces. According to a recent survey, 70% of local residents express a desire for more educational opportunities in their towns. The partnership with the University of Nebraska could meet this demand and significantly benefit the community.
