John Legend is making big waves in the music industry by switching management to Roc Nation. This news comes as he parts ways with his longtime manager, Ty Stiklorius, and her firm, Friends at Work.
It’s not entirely clear when this change occurred. Just last month, Legend was still listed on Friends at Work’s roster, showing that they were still working together. Stiklorius even spoke highly of their partnership during a panel for Global Citizen in February.
Stiklorius has expressed pride in their two-decade partnership, saying, “Twenty years is a lifetime in this business.” She feels excited about what the future holds for them both, even as she passes management duties to Jay Brown at Roc Nation. Stiklorius will continue to support Legend in his various ventures, both profit and nonprofit.
Since his rise to fame in 2004 with his debut album Get Lifted, John Legend has become a powerhouse in R&B, earning 13 Grammy Awards. His hit song “All of Me” has achieved remarkable success, going platinum 14 times. He’s also known for popular collaborations like “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” with Meghan Trainor.
Legend and Stiklorius have had a long journey together. They started working together back in 2006, and she was instrumental in founding John Legend Ventures. When she launched Friends at Work in 2014, Legend stuck with her, moving along as she transitioned from Troy Carter’s management firm, Atom Factory.
Meanwhile, Friends at Work still manages artists such as Charlie Puth, who recently released his fourth album, Whatever’s Clever!. The company is also home to bands like The National and jazz singer Arooj Aftab. Stiklorius has built a reputation not just for her management skills but also for advocating against inequalities in the music industry. In 2024, she wrote a compelling opinion piece in the New York Times discussing toxic culture within the music scene, especially amid serious allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs.
On the other hand, Roc Nation, founded by Jay-Z, boasts a star-studded lineup that includes Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and Megan Thee Stallion. Even though Roc Nation didn’t comment on Legend’s switch, they did share a post on Instagram featuring him during his A Night of Songs & Stories Tour.
