Another recent study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science compared flaxseed oil with other oils in dogs. This 16-week trial found no notable differences in skin health or inflammation markers among the oils. This suggests that flaxseed is a strong contender among seed oils for canine diets.
Moreover, a 2016 study in the International Journal of Obesity pointed out that flaxseed itself may offer more advantages than just the oil. Researchers noted changes in fat digestibility when flaxseed was paired with calcium, highlighting that the amount used might affect how well dogs handle it.
Looking ahead, a 2025 study noted that linseed press cake—often used as a protein source—showed lower digestibility compared to other oilseed cakes. This suggests that while flaxseed is valuable, its application can vary in effectiveness based on form and combination with other ingredients.
Flaxseed isn’t just beneficial for dogs. In a 2022 study, researchers investigated how ground flaxseed affected healthy adult cats. It increased serum ALA levels quickly without harming nutrient absorption or stool quality, making it a safe addition to their diets.
Earlier, a 2011 examination found that while both flaxseed oil and fish oil offered benefits for cats’ skin responses, flaxseed oil was less likely to suppress the immune system. This emphasizes flaxseed oil’s role in a balanced diet, especially for pets with specific health needs.
Across species, these studies collectively highlight that flaxseed and its derivatives are not only rich in ALA but also serve as sustainable, plant-based protein sources. They also provide dietary fiber when used in various forms, whether whole seeds, ground or as mucilage.
The growing popularity of plant-based ingredients in pet food aligns with the shift toward sustainability in various industries.
