Heartbreaking Defeat: Pride Struggles in Clash Against Sacred Heart University

The Hofstra University men’s lacrosse team faced a tough defeat against No. 20 Sacred Heart University on March 28, losing 15-13 at James M. Shuart Stadium. This loss pushed Hofstra’s record to 2-7 for the season, while Sacred Heart continues its impressive undefeated streak.

Coach Seth Tierney highlighted that despite the loss, his team put in a solid effort. “The ball hasn’t gone our way, but I hope this performance energizes us,” he said.

Sophomore Drew Bogardus stood out by scoring a season-high four goals, bringing his total to ten this season. Coach Tierney noted Bogardus’s determination: “He didn’t let previous struggles affect him. I’m proud of how he played.”

The game began with DeYoung scoring for Hofstra just 38 seconds in. Sacred Heart quickly equalized. A unique play unfolded when Pioneers goalie Craig Daria, aiming to clear the ball, scored while Hofstra’s goalie was marking a defender.

Throughout the first half, Hofstra kept pace with Sacred Heart, largely due to a significant improvement in faceoffs. Nico Ghicas, a freshman, won 13 out of 27 faceoffs, a big jump from Hofstra’s 33.7% average this season. “Ghicas is learning, and he showed great progress today,” Tierney noted.

In the second half, Sacred Heart built a four-goal lead at one point. Though Bogardus and DeYoung scored to narrow the gap, Hofstra couldn’t close the distance for a comeback.

Statistically, the Pride excelled in multiple areas, such as fewer turnovers and more ground balls. “In three of our last four games, if you looked at the stats without names, you’d think we won,” Tierney said. “We just haven’t secured that final important stat: the win.”

Tierney also emphasized that the team played one of its best games this season. “When you’re losing, it’s easy to lose your edge. But today, we aimed to play with high energy,” he explained.

With a recent loss to Monmouth University, the Pride are looking to bounce back. They have one more chance to improve their record during a home game against Fairfield University on April 4.

In the world of college lacrosse, it’s important to recognize how teams respond to adversity. Recent trends reveal a growing emphasis on analytics and stats among collegiate programs. For example, a 2022 NCAA report noted that teams using advanced data saw a 15% increase in offensive effectiveness. This highlights the evolving strategies in the sport as teams seek to elevate their game.

As Hofstra sharpens its skills and tackles the challenges ahead, their journey is a reminder that both the process and the results matter.
