Project Prom: Making Dreams Come True

Finding the right prom dress is a dream for many high schoolers. But for some, it can be a tough challenge due to cost. That’s where the Tau Kappa sorority at Shippensburg University steps in with their annual “Project Prom” event.

On March 29, they hosted this year’s event at Heiges Field House. Attendees browsed through an impressive selection of dresses, shoes, and accessories. They even had the chance to win prizes in raffles and receive free makeup from Ulta Beauty.

Since starting in 2010, Project Prom has become a cherished tradition. Over the years, it has raised nearly $9,000 for local organizations that empower women and girls. The aim is simple: to help teens attend prom without financial worry.

“The main goal has always been to help teens afford prom,” said Miranda Fisher, the faculty advisor for Tau Kappa. “This event shows our student-athletes the importance of serving their community.”

This year, Tau Kappa sold 36 dresses and raised $600 to support the B.E.E. Tough Foundation. This nonprofit honors Brooke Emery, a former track athlete who passed away in 2021. The foundation provides scholarships and equipment to help local youth engage in sports, inspired by Brooke’s spirit.

“B.E.E. Tough means a lot to us. Brooke’s passing left a significant impact on our campus,” Fisher added. “By supporting this foundation, we keep her legacy alive.”

The success of Project Prom is a testament to the teamwork of student-athletes, campus groups, and local donors. It’s more than just a chance to find a dress; it’s about creating connections and celebrating support.

Recent studies indicate that community service enhances student well-being. Programs like Project Prom not only benefit the recipients but also foster a sense of purpose and pride among volunteers. The positive ripple effects are felt throughout the entire community.

As Tau Kappa continues this tradition, they’re making a lasting impact, reminding everyone that it’s not just about the dress—it’s about the joy of giving and being part of something bigger.
