Tiger Woods recently found himself in a troubling situation when he was involved in a rollover crash in Florida. According to a probable cause affidavit, the 50-year-old golf legend admitted to looking at his phone and adjusting the radio just before the accident happened.
The incident took place near his home on Jupiter Island. Woods’s Land Rover clipped a truck, which caused his vehicle to flip onto its side. He later told investigators that he didn’t realize the truck in front of him had slowed down.
Woods tried to overtake the truck by crossing a double yellow line but ended up colliding with it. Fortunately, the driver of the other vehicle, Jeremy Bullard, didn’t suffer any injuries. However, the crash caused about $5,000 in damages.
Witnesses reported several signs suggesting Woods may have been impaired at the time of the accident. Deputies noted his profuse sweating, sluggish movement, and that his eyes were bloodshot. His speech and movements were described as slow and lethargic.
Woods insisted he hadn’t been drinking but acknowledged taking “a few” prescription medications that day, including Vicodin, alongside other medications for blood pressure and cholesterol. Officers conducted sobriety tests, during which Woods appeared to struggle with balance and coordination.
Due to these observations, he was arrested shortly after 3 PM. A search revealed two hydrocodone pills in his pocket, and though a breath test showed no alcohol in his system, he refused to provide a urine sample for a drug test.
Woods was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to testing. He spent a mandatory eight hours in jail after being cleared at a local hospital before posting a $1,150 bail.
His arraignment is scheduled for April 23 at 8:30 AM in Martin County court.
Driving while distracted is a serious issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,142 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving in 2019 alone. The dangers of multitasking behind the wheel, whether it’s using a phone or adjusting controls, can lead to devastating consequences.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying focused while driving, no matter who you are. Even public figures like Woods are not immune to the dangers of distracted driving.
