SANGSAD BHABAN, March 31, 2026 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo recently shared important updates regarding accountability in the environmental sector. He emphasized the government’s strong commitment to protecting our environment and tackling corruption.
In response to a question from BNP lawmaker AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Mintoo addressed concerns over significant financial irregularities reported over the past 14 years. He acknowledged a troubling report by Transparency International Bangladesh, which revealed alleged corruption of Tk 2,110 crore in projects backed by the Climate Change Trust Fund from 2009 to 2024.
To combat these issues, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is actively investigating. Mintoo assured that the Trust Fund has fully cooperated, providing all necessary documents to the ACC.
Looking ahead, he introduced several strategic initiatives to boost transparency. One key plan involves integrating project processing into the Planning Division’s online software. This will allow for real-time monitoring of projects. Additionally, a new committee will carefully review project proposals, particularly in areas most affected by climate change.
The government has also implemented the “Trust Fund Money Use Policy (Revised 2025)” to ensure proper management of funds. Alongside this, a digital monitoring system is being developed to keep an eye on approved projects.
Mintoo outlined steps to enhance oversight within the Department of Environment (DoE), highlighting a shift to completely online processing for environmental clearances. This change aims to eliminate any manual interference that could lead to corruption. The DoE is also increasing internal audits and providing integrity training to its staff.
Furthermore, the minister declared that any signs of corruption during project implementation would prompt immediate investigations and sanctions.
In a broader context, addressing corruption in climate and environmental sectors has become a crucial topic globally.
